1940 Cadillac Series 60 Special: A New Kind of Luxury Sedan

With its long, clean roofline and running boards left behind, the 1940 Cadillac Series 60 Special looked less like a traditional chauffeur’s car and more like a vision of the modern luxury sedan. Built by Cadillac, General Motors’ prestige marque, the Special combined a roomy four-door body with the marque’s smooth V8 power and distinctive Fleetwood character.

The Series 60 Special had debuted in 1938, the work of young Cadillac designer William L. Mitchell, who would later lead GM’s design division. By 1940, its forward-looking shape had become a recognizable part of Cadillac’s lineup. One detail that still catches people’s attention is its clean, board-free profile: the body was designed to look complete without the running boards that remained common on many cars of the era.

Fleetwood Style and Cabin Craft

The 1940 model wore Cadillac’s evolving prewar styling: a broad, upright grille, sweeping front fenders, integrated headlamps, and a long body with a neatly defined rear luggage compartment. Its proportions gave the car a formal presence without the tall, separate-body look of many earlier luxury sedans. The Series 60 Special was a four-door sedan, and that single body style became its signature rather than a limitation.

Inside, the cabin paired generous space with the restrained polish expected of a Cadillac. Depending on the car’s original specification, upholstery could include high-quality cloth or leather, with coordinated trim and carefully finished details. Wide seats, substantial door panels, and a broad dashboard made the interior feel more like a comfortable sitting room than a basic transportation cabin. Today, upholstery and trim can vary significantly because many surviving cars have been restored or re-trimmed.

Factory paint choices varied by year and specification. Buyers could choose from a range of subdued and richer period colors, including dark shades such as black, maroon, blue, and green, along with lighter tones. Black and deep colors suit the car’s formal character especially well, though a well-preserved original finish is often more compelling to collectors than any particular color.

Engineering Ahead of Its Time

Power came from Cadillac’s 346-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) L-head V8, rated at about 135 horsepower for 1940. The engine used a side-valve layout, a proven design that favored smooth, quiet operation over high-revving performance. A three-speed synchromesh manual transmission was standard. Unlike some later Cadillacs, the 1940 Series 60 Special did not come with Hydra-Matic; Cadillac offered that automatic transmission starting with the 1941 model year.

The Special also benefited from the broader engineering strengths of Cadillac’s lineup, including independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes. Its sealed-beam headlamps were part of a major U.S. lighting standard introduced for 1940, improving consistency and serviceability compared with earlier headlamp arrangements. These features helped make the car feel sophisticated in everyday use, not merely impressive in a showroom.

Why the Sixty Special Mattered

The Series 60 Special helped move luxury-car styling toward the integrated, all-in-one sedan shape that later became familiar. Its lower, cleaner body and lack of running boards made it appear more modern than many contemporaries, while its practical four-door layout kept it useful for family and business travel. Rather than relying on excessive ornament, the design made its statement through proportion and surface.

Mitchell’s work on the Special also marked an important moment in his career. The car established him as a major influence at Cadillac and helped open the way for the design leadership he would later hold at General Motors. The 1940 version refined the original idea, showing that a luxury sedan could retain traditional comfort while adopting a distinctly modern silhouette.

V8 Performance and Road Manners

Period performance depended on equipment, road conditions, and the car’s state of tune, but a healthy Series 60 Special could reach roughly 85 to 90 mph. A 0-to-60-mph time in the neighborhood of 16 to 18 seconds is a reasonable estimate, rather than a guaranteed factory figure. The Cadillac’s purpose was relaxed, dignified speed, not quick launches or sporting-car agility.

On the road, the V8 delivers a muted, steady rumble, and the car gathers speed smoothly once underway. Its substantial weight and long wheelbase help it ride comfortably over ordinary bumps, though worn suspension parts can make an old example float or wander. On a winding road, expect measured steering response and noticeable body movement rather than modern precision. The driver sits behind a large wheel and works a manual gearbox, so the experience is engaging in a hands-on, prewar way.

Living With a 1940 Cadillac

Most Series 60 Specials today are used as show cars, touring cars, or weekend classics rather than daily transportation. They are enjoyable on scenic drives, but their age brings practical limits: fuel economy is modest, braking distances are long by modern standards, and safety equipment is far less comprehensive than in a contemporary car.

Routine service is manageable for an owner familiar with older American cars, and many mechanical components are shared with other Cadillacs of the period. However, maintenance is not always a simple do-it-yourself job. Parts for the V8 and common service items may be obtainable through specialist suppliers, while trim, body details, correct upholstery, and certain model-specific pieces can be expensive or difficult to source. Before buying, inspect the frame and body for rust, check the engine’s cooling and oiling systems, and confirm that the brakes and electrical system have been properly sorted.

1940 Series 60 Special Facts

William L. Mitchell’s connection to the car is one of its best-known stories: the designer behind the Special later became one of the most influential styling executives in American automotive history. The model’s running-board-free profile was another memorable departure from convention, helping give it a sleek, unified appearance.

There is no famous Series 60 Special speed or endurance record that defines the model. Its reputation rests instead on design influence and Cadillac’s prewar engineering. Production estimates put 1940 Series 60 Special output at approximately 4,700 cars, making it uncommon today without being a one-off rarity. The year also belongs to the final stretch of prewar motoring; U.S. automakers shifted to wartime production in the early 1940s, and civilian Cadillac production was suspended during the war.

Common criticisms are familiar to anyone considering a large prewar luxury car: high fuel consumption, limited modern safety features, and a ride and steering feel that can seem vague by today’s standards. Those traits are part of its period character, but they also make careful maintenance and sensible driving essential.

Collector Value and Availability

As a practical market estimate, a 1940 Series 60 Special needing substantial work may sell for roughly $20,000 to $35,000. A sound, usable example could fall around $35,000 to $60,000, while a high-quality restoration or exceptional original car may bring $65,000 to $100,000 or more. These are broad ranges, not a formal appraisal: condition, originality, restoration quality, documentation, and regional demand can move a price substantially.

With production estimated at about 4,700, the model is scarce enough to attract serious Cadillac enthusiasts, but examples do appear in specialist sales and classic-car listings. Values tend to reward condition and authenticity more than modifications. Over time, the market for well-restored prewar Cadillacs has generally shown resilience, though individual prices fluctuate with the broader collector-car market and the cost of restoration.

A Cadillac With Lasting Influence

The 1940 Cadillac Series 60 Special brought together a powerful, smooth V8, a carefully finished cabin, and a body shape that pointed toward the future of the luxury sedan. Its importance is not just that it was a prestigious Cadillac, but that it helped make modern-looking design feel at home in a practical four-door car. More than eight decades later, the Sixty Special still looks like a turning point on wheels.
